The gizzard of a bird is a highly muscular structure lined with a tough, abrasive keratin-like layer called koilin. The sandpaper-like grinding action is assisted by grits and stones deliberately ingested. This action is enormously powerful and can even deal with pieces of metal. Coarse grit is suitable for Pigeons, chickens and other large birds , wild or caged. It contains flint grits that act as grinding agents in the gizzard to aid digestion. Limestone and oyster shell are soluble ingredients which are high in calcium and trace element minerals
